The highest marathon in history
The world’s highest marathon is defined by altitude - and this one sets the bar even higher.
In May 2027, every step of the 42.2km course will start at 4,810m (above the summit of Mt Blanc) and remain above 4,400 metres throughout, making it the highest marathon ever attempted, and securing a new world record.
Every participant who crosses the finish line will become a world record holder - part of a select group of runners who achieve something truly extraordinary, in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The expedition
At altitude, even standing still demands effort. Running a marathon there demands something far greater.
In May 2027, a small group of runners will set out on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition - the World’s Highest Marathon, across the remote Bolivian Altiplano. The journey begins in La Paz, the highest capital city on Earth, before travelling through Lake Titicaca, the vast Uyuni Salt Flats, and into the high Andes. Along the way, runners will climb above 6,000 metres, giving their bodies time to adapt before the challenge ahead.
The marathon itself will start at 4,750 metres, where oxygen levels are just 58% of those at sea level. With every step remaining above 4,400 metres, the course will set a new world record for the highest marathon ever run.
At this altitude, the environment becomes the real challenge. Cold temperatures, exposed terrain, and the vastness of the Altiplano will test strength, resilience, and determination in one of the most demanding environments on Earth.
Participants will be supported throughout by an experienced team of high-altitude specialists, medics, and logistics experts, guiding them from the moment they sign up through to race day.
